"Upside Down" Movie Review
Introduction
"Upside down" is a sci-fi romantic movie. It revolves around Adam (Sturgess), an apparently
ordinary guy in an extraordinary universe which consists of 2 different
gravities. While he is living in the world “down below”, he falls in love with
a woman, Eden (Dunst) who lives in an inverted world with its own gravity, from
“the world above”. They first met with each other during childhood and their
love has begun since young. However, due to the law that prevent people from the
world “down below” to get into contact with people from “the world above”, their
love has to be forced into crisis.
What will happen to Adam and Eden?

Review:
“Upside Down” is a movie with a fresh
new theme of romance in a sci-fi setting. I personally love the idea because I
find it quite interesting. This kind of daring attempt would surely deliver a
magnificent film if the story is well-written. Sadly, the story telling in this
film is lack of some gist. Although the love between two people from different worlds
is a great theme, the movie is unable to deliver a sufficient amount of the
chemistry between the two lovers. Thus, making their romantic relationship feels
quite empty. It feels like a superficial depiction of Romeo and Juliet love story in a scientific setting.
However,
I need to compliment this movie for its stunning and breath-taking visuals. The
visual effect in this film is amazing and able to create a totally believable
universe. The moment you see the scenes involving landscape in this movie, you
will only come out with one word in your mind, “Beautiful!”.
Regarding
the casts of this film, I personally think that Jim Sturgess and Kirsten
Dunst is a good combination. Both of them are charming and they are a good mix-up
as a couple on screen. It’s such a waste that they do not have too much scenes
whereby both of them are together with each other. Despite the limited
on-screen couple scenes, their acting is convincing enough to let us feel that
they are in love with each other.
As
for the pacing of the movie, I think it is quite inconsistent. Some of the
scenes progress with a slow and relaxing tempo but suddenly followed by a
rushing tempo. The ending feels a bit too abrupt. There are also some unexplainable
things and plot holes too.
About
the background soundtrack, I think the music is instrumentally intelligent and
is quite fitting for the setting in this film. The music is definitely going to
draw you in into the universe of this film.
Overall, the movie is not bad.
But it would be a great movie if it has a better touch-up on its
romantic development and the pace of the story!
What
I like about the movie:
- Interesting idea.
- Visually stunning.
- Good combination of couple on screen.
- Nice background
music which can draw you in
What
I dislike about the movie:
- Lacking of
chemistry between the two lovers
- Inconsistent
tempo in the progression of the story
- Abrupt
ending with some plot holes
Verdict:
This movie deserves a 6.5/10.0!
A
nice attempt in delivering romantic story in a distinct setting!
Suitable
for couples who love simple romantic movies!
However, for those who are having high-expectation
on its sci-fi factor, most probably you will get disappointed.
