Synopsis
|
Blanche DuBois is a fading, but still attractive, Southern belle whose
pretensions to virtue and culture only thinly mask alcoholism and delusions
of grandeur. Blanche arrives at the apartment of her younger sister Stella
Kowalski in New Orleans. The local transportation that gets her there
includes a streetcar route named Desire. The steamy, urban ambiance is a
shock to Blanche’s nerves. Stella, who fears the reaction of her husband Stanley,
welcomes Blanche with some trepidation.
In contrast to both the self-effacing and deferential Stella and the
pretentious refinement of Blanche, Stanley Kowalski is a force of nature:
primal, brutish and sensual. He dominates Stella in every way and is
physically and emotionally abusive.
The arrival of Blanche upsets her sister and brother-in-law’s
relationship dynamics, resulting in a series of emotional, physical and
sexually abusive confrontations.
The story ends with Blanche suffering a nervous breakdown and Stanley
having her committed to a mental institution.
HISTORY
1947-2013 | Tennessee Williams’ A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
A Streetcar Named Desire was written by American Playwright Tennessee
Williams and was first performed on Broadway on December 3, 1947. It
subsequently went on to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. The
Broadway production was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Marlon Brando,
Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden.
The London production opened in 1949 with Bonar Colleano, Vivien Leigh
and Renee Asherson. It was directed by Laurence Olivier.
In 1951 a film adaptation of the play won 4 Academy Awards.
A Streetcar Named Desire is considered one of the greatest classics of
Western Theatre and it has been the subject of much debate, re-stagings and
adaptations the world over.
2014 | Joe
Hasham’s A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE the ballet
There have been several ballet adaptations over the years. Some
successful, some not. The point of difference between Joe Hasham’s adaptation
and those that have come before will be a convergence of dance genres that
includes Malaysian/Japanese collaboration.
The role of Blanche DuBois will be played by a prima ballerina and her
performance will be totally classical ballet oriented; the rest of the
characters will be performing a ‘la contemporary and/or modern.
This decision stems from the fact that the character of Blanche Dubois
is frail, brittle, cultured and refined in comparison to everyone else around
her.
