Zookeeper Review

Zookeeper Review

After watching the trailer for this movie, I thought "Zookeeper" would be something like "Night In The Museum".
Do you feel the same too? Well,if you do, then you would most probably be disappointed as this movie is nothing at all similar to "Night In The Museum". Although the genre for this movie is listed as action/comedy,it turned out to be less of these elements and more about romance.

The movie starts off with a guy named Griffin ( Kevin James ) trying to propose to his lover,Stephanie but is rejected because she doesn't like his job as a zookeeper. Then, the story shifted forward to 5 years later where Griffin is still a Zookeeper. He spent a lot of time with the animals and treated them well. So,all the animals love him. For the past 5 years when he was working at zoo, he's been telling the stories of him getting rejected by Stephanie over and over again to those animals.

One night,Griffin holds a party at the zoo for his brother Dave (Nat Faxon) who is getting married. He was shocked to discover that Stephanie was invited to the party. Dave then offers Griffin to come and work with him at the car dealership, explaining that it is the best way to win Stephanie. So, Griffin starts to think that he should leave his job as a zookeeper and join his brother.

However, the animals in the zoo love him and feels that Griffin is the best zookeeper at the zoo and hope that he can stay. So,the animals try to help Griffin to win Stephanie's heart. They then reveal to Griffin that they can actually TALK.
(Why they can talk but they didn't usually do so? This part is explained like in Toy's Story, whereby these animals have a code among theirselves ,that is, they have to pretend that they don't know how to talk when in front of the humans so that they won't freak out the humans.)

The story then proceed with those animals including wolf, bear, lion, monkey, giraffe, gorilla and etc teaching Griffin on how to attract and win Stephanie's heart. Griffin has also asked for the help from his zoo veterinarian, Kate (Rosario Dawson).

After a lot of attempts, Griffin has finally made Stephanie fall for him again. But he eventually still quit the job as a zookeeper because stephanie requested him to do so. But then, Griffin starts to realize that he's not being himself when with Stephanie. He also realized that he was in love with someone else.

What I like about the movie:
1) Kevin James has put a lot of effort trying to make the movie laughable by making fools of himself and creating funny acts. He really did a great job.
2) The positive message delivered in this film, that we should find someone who love you for who you are and not someone who wants to transform you into another person.
3) Love and care for the animals. ( In the movie, Griffin has been treating the animals as his best friends.)

What I dislike about the movie:
1) Totally a different direction from what I have expected. (I thought of having a thrilling fun like in "Night in the Museum" but ended up getting a slow-paced romance movie)
2) Despite Kevin James' act, the story is not that interesting and not much laugh that I have throughout the movie.
3) The movie has only climaxed at the last 15 minutes of the show.

Conclusion
The movie is passable but not impressive.
It's not a thrilling/action movie. But it's not a very romantic movie either.
However, I think kids might enjoy it because I am sure kids will be amused by the talking animals.

Ratings:
5.5/10 Stars
