"Killing Season"
Movie Review
Introduction
The
movie involves the story of two veterans of the Bosnian War, one American
and one Serbian, who clash in the war at Appalachian Mountain. Benjamin Ford (played by Robert De Niro) is the American soldier while Emil Kovac (played by John Travolta) is the Serbian soldier. Both of them were able to survive from the war.
The story started with Ford trying to escape from the painful memories
of war. He has retreated and stayed in an isolated cabin in the woods. Kovac on
the other hand tried to seek out Ford’s whereabouts, in order to settle an old
score with Ford.
What will happen if Kovac is able to find out
where Ford is?
Who will win between these two ex-soldiers?
Will anyone of them dies in the personal war
started by Kovac?

“Killing Season” has taken a noteworthy move to bring two of
the notable actors, Robert De Niro
and John Travolta together in the
same film. Both of them indeed have remarkable acting. It is really great to see
this combination! However, it is obvious too that the film depends ONLY on
these two actors. There are very few casts in this film and their roles are
non-significant in this film too.
The plot is straight forward with very little
character development. The characters’ personalities and backgrounds were
lazily elaborated making it hard for the audience to feel attached to the
characters in the movie. The pacing of the story is also inconsistent and at
times there is too many unnecessary conversations. These has made the story
dull and draggy.
The script is tedious and the characters are
sometimes dumb. At the beginning of the movie, Kavoc seems like a smart
opponent and is even able to detect Ford easily. However, after some time, he
seems like a dumb character who would stupidly expose himself in front of the cabin
just to get assaulted by Ford. It is the same for Ford who has some dumb moments too.
The dialogues were also repetitive and didn’t
really make sense. They are trying to make their conversation sounds cool but
the dialogues were actually unimpressive at all.
The only admirable scenes in this film are
those painful scenes which show the gross penetrated wounds on the characters’
face, leg and etc. You can somehow imagine the pain felt by the characters via these
scenes.
Overall, the movie is indeed ambitious. The
movie has great main actors and themes but it was ruined by the lousy plot, messy
scripts and repetitive dialogues. All these stop the movie from being a
spectacular experience.
What I like about the movie:
- The combination of two great actors
- Painful scenes which are quite realistic
What I dislike about the movie:
- Lacklustre plot
- Inconsistent pacing
- Minimal character development
- Repetitive and uninteresting dialogues
- Feels like a low-budget film
If you seriously love to see how’s the
chemistry between Robert De Niro and John Travolta would be, then you can try
watching it! But do not go in the cinema with too high of an expectation!
For those who are not fans of either one, it would be totally fine if you
just avoid the movie!
