Introduction
The
film starts off with a cop, Nick (played by Ryan Reynolds) being killed
during an incident. After his death, he was chosen by the R.I.P.D (Rest In
Peace Department) to be their officer. R.I.P.D is a group of undead polices who
hunt for the deceased souls who escaped their judgement. Nick was being paired
up with a veteran sheriff, Roy (played by Jeff Bridges) in R.I.P.D. When
they are doing their jobs in the living world, Nick would appear as an old
Chinese while Roy would appear as a hot blonde chick.
What will R.I.P.D job
like?

Review:
“R.I.P.D” is actually based on a comic book with the
same name. The story feels similar like MIB (Men In Black) and some of the enemies
look like MIB aliens too. The only difference is, in this movie, the enemies
are the dead souls instead of aliens. With the similar formula like MIB and
great trailer, many people would have high expectation on this film. However,
the significant flaws stop it from reaching the top.
The movie has a familiar plot with a good
pacing. It has some funny moments which can definitely make you laugh. Other
than that, the plot is basically predictable and you would have already figured
out what would happen next after every scene. The action sequence in the movie
is fast and satisfactory but the CGI effects during those action scenes are
unrealistic and not well-crafted. But the camera angles at certain scenes are
spectacular.
As for character development, only Nick’s life
was explained more but Roy’s background is basically ignored. Of course, I personally think that the interaction
between Nick and Roy is really good. However, Ryan’s and Jeff’s acting in this
film is not their best compared to other films they have taken part in. For the
background setting, nothing much was really explained regarding the parallel
worlds of the death and the living beings. It is hard for the audience to
digest and get engaged with the setting in the film.
Anyway, while the movie does have some good
moments, all these moments are basically those good scenes covered in the
trailer video. The best parts of the movie are actually already shown in the
trailer. So, the rest of the movie is basically mediocre with a lot of
illogical events and unexplained matters. For the miscellaneous, the background music
score was nothing special but tolerable.
What I like about the movie:
- MIB –like plot with well-paced storyline progression
- Action sequence is fast
and sufficient
- Some humours which would
make the audience laugh
- Spectacular camera angle
at certain scenes
- Good chemistry between
the two main actors
What I dislike about the movie:
- Predictable plot
- Unsatisfying CGI effect
- Background setting which are not engaging
- Some unexplained plot holes
Verdict:
This movie deserves 5.5/10.0!
This movie deserves 5.5/10.0!
If you enjoy MIB and would really love
to watch a movie with almost similar concept, then maybe you would enjoy this
film!
If you are expecting this film to be much better than its trailer, you
will mostly get disappointed! It is indeed unique and interesting at some
points, but the good moments in the film that you will see is what you might
have already seen in the trailer!
