“The
Conjuring” is another horror-genre masterpiece
from James Wan (the director for Insidious, Saw). It has a very good
plot which is based on a true story. The storyline was delivered interestingly
with a very well-paced story progression. It began with the introduction of the
Warren with another mysterious case prior to the main event in the movie,
giving us an impression of how their work would be. After the introduction of the main
protagonists, the story progressed to the introduction of the victims in the
main event, the Perron family. Overall, the character development was well done
in this movie. It’s totally different from other horror movies nowadays whereby
those characters were introduced superficially and just meant to die. In this
film, there was an effort in making us know the characters more.
Besides that, the cinematography of the movie is also noteworthy. Instead
of focusing on gory/blood-filled/gross scenes as seen in typical scary movies
nowadays, it focuses on filming the scene in an angle with creepy background.
This can create a scary atmosphere for the audience. Apart from that, this was
complimented with the awesome background music which is very intense and mood-agonizing.
These two elements are able to make the audience feel what a genuine fear is.
In acting aspect, most of the actor and actresses have presented a
convincing acting except a minority of them basically having emotionless facial
expression. (One obvious example is the actor for Roger Perron who basically
has the same facial expression throughout the whole movie)
However, I was a bit disappointed with the make-up and design for the “ghost”/demon/evil
in this movie. The hand clapping and the sudden appearance were quite shocking
but when the camera focused onto the face of the “ghost”, it was really a bit
of a letdown and it was not as horrifying as I have expected.
Overall, it was an old-school style horror movie which is really aiming
to induce fear instead of visually disturbing the audience.
What
I like about the movie:
- Good plot with well-paced character introduction.
- Awesome cinematography
- Intense Background music
What
I dislike about the movie:
- Emotionless acting by some actor
- Disappointing make-up presentation of the demon/ghost
It’s
easily one of the best scary movie in the recent years. Horror movie fans, this
is a must watch movie for you!
To those who indulge in Final Destination
kind of gory/bloody scenes, then most probably you won’t like this film because
the amount of blood spilled in this movie is actually minimal.
